Alright, time to get right down to it. What everyone wants to see, where the final 8 stack up against each other. We’ll run down in reverse order, starting with #8.

#8. Jonathan “Light” Rodriguez
Starting off at the bottom of the list is Light. Don’t expect him to go too far in this event. With absolutely no practice leading up to the event, and no motivation to do anything besides show up, he’ll get run over. He has some experience playing this game in live competition, but that was over 16 months ago, the game in the US has changed considerably since then. He may be able to pull out a few games, but I don’t see him winning more then 1 match.
– Strengths: Experience in live events
– Weaknesses: Lack of motivation and practice
– Prediction: 0-6 in group play, 4th in group

#7. Matt “d00bi0us” Marcou
Our first returning finalist in a lower spot then many would think. Quite a few of the same issues Light had will be present here. d00bious has not had much time to get practice in, only getting a few days of practice over the last month. The big thing he has going that Light did not is natural talent. If he gets hot, he could steal a few matches from players who are off. This will more then likely not be enough to slip into bracket play however. Matt does a few things well, he can break decent as well as straight forward shots, however it will take more then that to take home a medal.
– Strengths: Breaks, Straight shots, Jump shots
– Weaknesses: Banking, cut shots, consistency
– Prediction: 1-5 in group play, 4th in group

#6. Patrick “pwyrick” Wyrick
Another player that has slid considerably since the last power rankings, pwyrick comes in just outside the top 5. He is a player with a good head, shot selection being his major asset. He has a good idea of the layout of the table, and how to approach his lines to win. Biggest issue is a matter of practice and consistency, just as we’ve seen with the last couple players. Patrick has only been at it about 2 weeks, leaving him less time to get back to playing form then what most the top 5 has put in. Aim consistency has been the big thing hampering him. If he can keep that in check, he could easily slide up into medal contention.
– Strengths: Shot selection, Table vision
– Weaknesses: Consistency, Late to practice
– Prediction: 2-4 in group play, 3rd in group

#5. Sean “Wraith_zYn” Snack
Wraith starts out our top 5 strong. With a decently strong game, and the ability to upset top flight players, he is one of the x-factors this tournament. A recurring theme here is a lack of practice leading up to the event, even less then pwyrick before. Wraith makes up for that with a better ability to adapt quickly. Take a look at qualifier 6, where pwyrick beat wraith in the losers bracket final. The next qualifier, wraith smacks pwyrick twice to qualify. His bounce-back ability will only help him out against what could be stronger competition. He’ll have to keep his power and spin under control to have a real shot at going deep in bracket play as against the best, fouls will be punished many times harder then online.
– Strengths: Bounce-back. Upset potential.
– Weaknesses: Lack of practice, poor ball control
– Prediction: 3-3 in group play, 3rd in group

#4. Calvin “CjwEvolved” Walden
Breaking into predicted bracket players, CJ comes in at 4th. A bit of a suprise last year’s bronze medalist ends up here, especially since the silver medalist will not be returning, however things have changed quite a bit. CJ plays a fairly strong game, mostly solid aim and the ability to jump well should carry him far. There are a couple of glaring weaknesses in his game however. CJ has quite a tough time with bank shots, usually missing and giving up a foul. He also does not have the best shot selection, which is the biggest thing holding him back. Severe cold snaps completes the picture of why a strong player ends up on the trailing end of bracket play. If he can get on a hot streak and keep it going all weekend, he very well could end up silver or better, the likelyhood of this however is not good.
– Strengths: Good aim, Jumps well, Can get very hot
– Weaknesses: Bank shots, Shot selection, Gets rather cold.
– Prediction: 4-2 in group play, 2nd in group. WS 0-3, LS 1-3 in bracket, 4th place.

#3. John “Kif1re” Vahary
A rather large surprise a late qualifier ends up this high on the list, however if you catch a game of his, you’ll see why. He has poured hours into the game improving, and it shows in his game. Night and day difference between where he started and where he is at this point. He is the best banker in the tournament by far, sinking consistently what other players would struggle to hit. He also rarely gives up fouls, which is key. On the flip side, the ability to bank has hampered the development of shot selection and placement. John is rather decent with ball placement, normally not hurting him, but when it does, it’s usually in a big way. Another big weakness is the inability to jump. Banking can only get you so far, sometimes you just have to leave the table, which he absolutely cannot do. The biggest by far is very inconsistent aim on rather standard shots. It’s been joked he’d be better off only shooting banks as he’d make more shots that way. Missing straight on shots is not something that a player can afford in a final.
– Strengths: Bank shots, few fouls
– Weaknesses: Misses easy shots, Jump shots
– Prediction: 4-2 in group play, 2nd in group. WS 1-3, LS 3-1, LF 1-3 in bracket play, 3rd place.

#2 Jon “skootz” Lunceford
No surprises here, last year’s 4th place finisher moves up into the #2 spot. Skootz has a very strong game, founded on his aim. He can hit a decent variety of shots with good consistency. He also has the ability to hit a ball as hard as possible, and have something go in more times then not. He doesn’t get cold terribly often, usually hitting in the same range often. He does on occasion put together a 1 or 2 miss game, however just as frequently he will hit a 50% game. Not the greatest at jump shots, and tends to leave his shots long, ball control is an issue. Biggest issue in his game is the skootz factor. He seems to choke on the 8 ball much more then any other player in the field. This is starting to happen less and less, but is still significant enough to be a major flaw.
– Strengths: Strong aim, Cross table banks
– Weaknesses: Ball control, Jump shots, skootz factor
– Prediction: 5-1 in group play, 1st in group. WS 3-1, WF 1-3, LF 3-1, CC 1-3. 2nd place.

#1. Zach “Zsta2k9″ Wolters
Last year’s returning champion shows up in a familiar spot. Zsta2k9 is still going to be the person to beat this weekend. The best shot selection in the field gives him a strong starting point. Also having good aim from anywhere on the table, and the uncanny ability to turn ball in hand into a 4-5 ball run makes him a dangerous player. Zsta is somewhat prone to having a bad game, however rarely shoots under 60%. Only weaknesses are a terribly inconsistent jump shot, and a fairly inconsistent break. It is possible for him to be beaten if he is having an off game, however it will be very tough to topple this player.
– Strengths: Strong aim, Deep cut shots, Punishes fouls, Shot selection
– Weaknesses: Jump shots, Inconsistent break
– Prediction: 6-0 in group play, 1st in group. WS 3-0, WF 3-1, CC 3-1. 1st place.

That takes care of where players are stacking up this weekend. Keep it parked here to get more analysis and coverage later in the week, starting with group draws and in depth predictions. Also watch zsta2k7 on twitter for live updates from NYC.

The tournament format is as follows:
Players are randomly split into groups of 4 for group play. Each player will play every other in their group twice. Match format is a best of 3, 8 ball sim. The top 2 players in the group will advance to bracket play. 2 way ties will be broken by head to head wins, then head to head game wins, then overall game +/- (wins – losses). 3+ way ties will be broken by wins within tied players, then game +/- within tied players, then overall +/-. If two players remain tied or others are eliminated, 2 player tiebreaker is applied. If players are tied after tiebreaker, a playoff match will occur.

The bracket stage will consist of a 4 player double elimination tournament. The winner of each group will be seeded against the 2nd place finisher from the opposite group. Match format is a best of 5, 8 ball sim. Winner of the loser’s bracket will have to win 2 series against the Winners bracket champ to win. Gold medalist takes home $1500 and the trip to China. Silver medalist ends up with $1000, and Bronze gets $500.

Match breakdowns for the bracket finals. Some of the matches aren’t paired yet, in which case you’ll see. Please for the love of god people show up.

Bracket 1 Final
#3 Patrick “pwyrick” Wyrick v Zach “Diggity” Smith
I’d expect to see pwyrick take this match without too much an issue. He’s playing a strong game as of yet, I can’t see Diggity stepping up and matching it. I’ll take pwyrick in 2.
pwyrick 2, Diggity 0

Bracket 2 Final
#10 Brock “foobz” Rudney v Kyle “Liess” Magee or Andrew “Toology” Boswell
Well, foobz doesn’t have an opponent yet, I’d imagine he should win this one.
foobz 2, ???????? 0

Bracket 3 Final
#4 Calvin “CjwEvolved” Walden v Jon “Infernal” Yacker or #5 Sean “Wraith_zYn” Snack
Last I checked, the FF win was reversed on infernal v Wraith. I’d assume they’ll play tonight before the rest of the games start. See my previous match breakdown for that. Either way, I don’t see CjwEvolved being stopped with as motivated as he is at the moment, at least not this round. I think CjwEvolved will crack the final 4 for the first time.
CjwEvolved 2, Infernal 0 OR CjwEvolved 2, Wraith_zYn 1

Bracket 4 Final
Steven “bluewolf83” Anderson v John “KiF1re” Vahary
A match between two people who could make a slight impact in the final four. KiF1re has an upper hand here being slightly more versed in Carom3d competition this year, but as I said last round, never discount bluewolf. I’ll say KiF1re in 3.
KiF1re 2, bluewolf83 1

Round 2 is here, the first full round of competition. 8 matches tonight, breaking the field from 16 to 8. All 7 ranked players thus far have made it this far, but a couple of them won’t make it past this round. Let’s take a look at the matchups.

Bracket 1, Match 1
#8 Jonathan “Light” Rodriguez v #3 Patrick “pwyrick” Wyrick
The third series between these 2 opponents this qualifier season, with the previous two coming in qualifier 1′s final four. I expect this series to go much the same way, pwyrick putting in a very solid performance to take the series in 2.
pwyrick 2, Light 0

Bracket 1, Match 2
#9 Matt “d00bi0us” Marcou v Zach “Diggity” Smith
In this one, the big question is will Diggity show up? If he does, it should be a kind of tight match, depending on how much prep d00bi0us has put in. I’d expect d00bi0us to take it in 2, but if he comes unprepared, we could possibly see an upset.
d00bi0us 2, Diggity 0

Bracket 2, Match 1

Denise “TastyMargarita” Hernandez v #10 Brock “foobz” Rudney
Gotta go with my boy foobz on this one, if he shows up on time. TastyMargarita is unproven, could possibly take an upset, as she is facing the anchor of the top 10. But still a top 10 opponent none the less. I’ll say foobz in 3.
foobz 2, TastyMargarita 1

Bracket 2, Match 2
Kyle “Liess” Magee v Andrew “Toology” Boswell
If Toology shows up, he should play well enough to take this match. Newcomer Liess needs to play well under pressure to stand a chance in this qualifier.
Toology 2, Liess 1

Bracket 3, Match 1
#4 Calvin “CjwEvolved” Walden v Kaila “Tanooki” Burtch
Unfortuate draw for Tanooki, facing off against a driven CjwEvolved. I honestly don’t expect this one to be close, CjwEvolved is on a mission in this qualifier, and it will take some strong play to take him down. I’ll say CjwEvolved in 2
CjwEvolved 2, Tanooki 0

Bracket 3, Match 2
Jon “Infernal” Yacker v #5 Sean “Wraith_zYn” Snack
The second-most one sided match of the night, Wraith looks to trample Infernal. Wraith has been putting in some pretty good games as of late, and I don’t see that trend stopping soon. Infernal will need 3 games of his life to try to grab a W in this one. When the dust settles, I see Wraith in 2.
Wraith_zYn 2, Infernal 0

Bracket 4, Match 1
Steven “bluewolf83” Anderson v #6 David “Lazerflip” Duncan
This match on the surface looks like it will be close, but truth be told, bluewolf83 is a bit rusty, and I don’t see him preparing enough to stand a decent chance in this one. Lazerflip in 2 here.
Lazerflip 2, bluewolf83 0

Bracket 4, Match 2
John “KiFire” Vahary v Dan “Comebackdan” Otto
Unless Comebackdan put some serious time into this one, or KiF1re comes in well off his game, this one shouldn’t be close. KiF1re should have a walk in the park here. I’ll take him in 2
KiF1re 2, Comebackdan 0

That takes care of tonight’s matches. Check back tomorrow for results and an in depth breakdown of the bracket finals.

As there are only 4 matches in round 1 this time round, I’ll be shortening it a bit with only 1 match per bracket, forgoing the bye matches. Not too friendly of a draw for our newcomers, with 3 getting stuck in the first round. Let’s take a look

Bracket 1 opening round
#3 Patrick “pwyrick” Wyrick v Otis “otislee” Lee
I’ll be 100% honest with you, I predict a FF win for pwyrick. In the case otislee does show up, I dont expect him to last too long in the ring against #3 on our power rankings.
pwyrick 2, otislee 0

Bracket 2 opening round
Kyle “Liess” Magee v Brent “CaromReaver” Schultz
CaromReaver is just outside our top 10, while Liess is new to WCG Carom3d. I’d expect caromreaver to run away with this one unless Liess can come up with a pretty good performance here. I don’t see CaromReaver losing to the inexperienced Liess though
CaromReaver 2, Liess 0

Bracket 3 opening round
Tyler “Herby569” Pringle v Kaila “Tanooki” Burtch
A match between a player that has played 1 match, and a new player to WCG Carom3d. Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. Herby569 was FFLed out of Qualifier 2, so I’d say Tanooki takes this one to sneak into the 2nd round.
Tanooki 2, Herby569 1

Bracket 4 opening round
John “KiFire” Vahary v Kieran “Xer0u_ZnWp” Hill
KiF1re takes on a newcomer in Xer0u_ZnWp. I expect that KiF1re should be able to take this match without too much of an issue. I could be suprised by an unknown newcomer though. My pick will be KiF1re though.

It’s time for qualifier 3. In less then an hour, the first matches of the qualifier will kick off, starting the week of matches leading up to a third seat in the US final being filled. 5 new players are mixing into the field of20 players, to give us 5 in every bracket. The brackets are once again pretty balanced, with only bracket 1 having a fair amount. Time to talk specifics.

In bracket 1, we have #8 Jonathan “Light” Rodriguez at the top again with a bye. Second time he’s randomly drawn the top spot in a row. He’ll face the winner of #3 Patrick “pwyrick” Wyrick vs Otis “otislee” Lee. On the other side, both #9 Matt “d00bi0us” Marcou and Zach “Diggity” Smith were given a bye, they’ll play eachother in the 2nd round. With 3 ranked players in the bracket, we should see some decent fireworks in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Pwyrick is my heavy favorite, although d00bi0us or Light have an equal opportunity at the upset.

In bracket 2, we only have one ranked player, leaving the bracket pretty well open. At the top we have newcomer Denise “TastyMargarita” Hernandez and #10 Brock “foobz” Rudney with byes, they’ll play each other in round 2. In the bottom, another newcomer Kyle “Liess” Magee takes on Brent “CaromReaver” Schultz in the first round. The winner there will play Andrew “Toology” Boswell. The kind of obvious favorite here is foobz, although CaromReaver has a more then decent shot at an upset. Don’t discount the newer players either, this is about as good a draw as they could have hoped for.

Bracket 3 starts off with #4 Calvin “CjwEvolved” Walden taking a bye. He’ll play the winner of the first round match between Tyler “Herby569” Pringle and new person Kaila “Tanooki” Burtch. On the other side, both Jon “Infernal” Yacker and #5 Sean “Wraith_zYn” Snack get byes into round 2 where they will face one another. This bracket should be kind of a walk through for both cjwevolved and wraith up til the final, although always be wary of new blood. I’ll take CjwEvolved in this one, but it definately isn’t even close to a done deal.

The final bracket in the single elimination has one ranked player mixed in with a few experienced players and should be pretty close. On top, we start with byes for both Steven “bluewolf83” Anderson and #6 David “Lazerflip” Duncan, they’ll play in round 2. On bottom, John “KiFire” Vahary will play against Kieran “Xer0u_ZnWp” Hill. The winner will play against Dan “Comebackdan” Otto, former CGS racer, who has a first round bye. In this bracket, the favorite for me is Lazerflip, although KiFire is just outside our top 10, as well as you can never fully discount bluewolf.

There you have it, match by match should be up shortly.

It’s power ranking time! Each off week, I’ll be doing a small piece on player rankings, how they stack up. These rankings are subjective, and just straight up win-loss and qualifier performance are a small portion of how these rankings are tabulated. To be elgible to be ranked, a player must participate in 2 ranked matches. A ranked match is a match within an eligible tournament that is not a FF. Eligible tournaments thus far are the WCG online qualifiers.

A little bit of stats before we get into the rankings. In the two qualifiers thus far, we have had 34 unique registrants. Of those 34, only 24 have played a match, the other 10 were FFed. Of the 24 that have played a match, 11 have only a single loss to show. Which leaves us with 13 players elgible for the power rankings this week. In the rankings, the players record is shown. Force forfeit matches do not count for or against a player’s record.

So, with all that said, here are your first power rankings of the year.

1. Zach “zsta2k9″ Wolters (5-0, 1 FFW, 0 FFL)
Q1: 1st, Q2: DNC
The 2008 US gold medalist zsta2k9 is still the player to beat. He got off to a hot start this year, with all 5 of his wins coming against ranked opponents. He flew through the first qualifier, continuing the dominance of last year. He isn’t unbeatable, as he was taken to 3 games twice, however at the moment it’ll take one hell of an effort to topple him.

2. Jon “skootz” Lunceford (6-1, 0 FFw, 0 FFL)
Q1: Round 1, Q2: 1st
Last year’s 4th place finisher skootz has already had his share of ups and downs this year. After getting upset in the first round of qualifier 1 by Wraith_zYn, he realized his half-assed effort wasn’t going to cut it. He put in the time to get back to form, and that paid off for him, showing that he can still lay down some solid pool. In his 6-0 run of qualifier 2, he did start off against less then stellar opponents. However the single elim final, as well as all the final four matches were against ranked opponents. With some closer matches in the final four, he’s still not 100% back, but he’s still playing well enough to be #2.

3. Patrick “pwyrick” Wyrick (7-4, 3 FFW, 0 FFL)
Q1: 2nd. Q2: 2nd
pwyrick, a new player to the world of competitive carom, is certainly making quite a splash. In both qualifiers, he wasn’t really tested in the single elimination portion, not playing a single match against a ranked opponent. However, in double elimination, his only losses were to the eventual winners, beating ranked opponents along the way. He has very good breakout potential, although slightly inconsistant. He had zsta2k9 on the ropes in qualifier 1, and it took quite an effort from zsta to take that series back. pwyrick is a player to watch moving forward to challenge for gold.

4. Calvin “CjwEvolved” Walden (2-1, 0 FFW, 1 FFL)
Q1: Round 3, Q2: Round 2
The bronze medalist last year, CjwEvolved has had a bit of a rocky start this year. In qualifier 1, he beat one unranked and one ranked opponent, before falling to zsta2k9. In qualifier 2, he lost by submission to Kif1re, a match he probably would have won if it was 8 ball. CjwEvolved hasn’t had the best circumstances this year as of yet, however it also seems like his game hasn’t been working for him either. He has the potential to move up in rank, but he needs to figure out why his game just isn’t clicking.

5. Sean “Wraith_zYn” Snack (4-3, 2 FFW, 0 FFL)
Q1: Round 3, Q2: 3rd
Wraith_zYn, someone a little more accustomed to Gears 2, seems to be fitting right in here in the carom world as well. His first match, he upset skootz, which was more then a little bit surprising. In the rest of qualifier 1, he beat an unranked opponent, and lost to a ranked opponent. In Qualifier 2, he walked through 2 unranked opponents and kifire in the single elim portion, then beat 1 ranked opponent, and lost to 2 in the double elim. He’s definitely got some room to improve, but plays well enough to beat many players if they aren’t on top of their game.

6. David “Lazerflip” Duncan (1-2, 1 FFW, 0 FFL)
Q1: Round 1, Q2: Round 3
Another new player, Lazerflip, comes in 6th in our rankings. In the first qualifier, he got paired up against zsta2k9, and lost in 2 games. In qualifier 2, he beat one ranked and got one FF before dropping to skootz in a decent match. His game is unpolished, but is still pretty solid. If he can tighten up his aim a bit, he could shoot up the list pretty quickly.

7. Colin “SkyllusvBi” Fogle (3-1, 0 FFW, 1 FFL)
Q1: 4th, Q2: DNC
The Team USA representative last year, skyllusvBi, has fallen off a bit. In Qualifier 1, he cruised through the single elimination portion against unranked opponents. When double elimination rolled around, he lost a pretty close match against zsta2k9, and dropped out with a FFL. The big thing with skyllus is lack of dedication. For good reason, as he is on a top 4 Gears 2 team in MLG, so his focus should be elsewhere. His carom game is suffering for it though. Look for him to come back in qualifier 4 or 5 if he is going to attempt carom.

8. Jonathan “Light” Rodriguez (2-3, 2 FFW, 0 FFL)
Q1: 3rd, Q2: Round 2
Light, somewhat of an old hat at carom, coming in 3rd in last year’s US open, comes in at 8th. In the first qualifier, Light went through 1 unranked player, one ranked player, and got a ffw en route to the final four. In double elim, he dropped his first series to pwyrick, FFed skyllus, and then lost to pwyrick again. In the second qualifier, he dropped to an unranked player, but it was in 3 ball, so take it with a grain of salt. Biggest thing keeping him lower in the rankings is inconsistency.

9. Matt “d00bi0us” Marcou (0-2, 0 FFW, 0 FFL)
Q1: Round 2, Q2: Round 1
Last year’s 5th place finisher d00bi0us comes in at 9th. In qualifier 1 he fell to CjwEvolved in a rather close match. In qualifier 2, he lost another tight one to lazerflip. The big wild card for d00bi0us is the amount of time he can spend practicing, and getting back in shape. He probably won’t be in form until mid july, which may not be a bad thing as it can thin out the field some for him. If he can take the time to get back to good, he should be able to nab a US final spot.

10. Brock “foobz” Rudney (1-1, 2 FFW, 2 FFL)
Q1: Round 2, Q2: 4th
A finalist in the 2008 US final, foobz rounds out our list. In the first qualifier, foobz got a FFL. The second qualifier was a bit better, ousting an unranked player and getting a FFW en route to the final four. In the final four, foobz dropped his first match to wraith, then left, ffing his last match to pwyrick. foobz really needs to put in some time and work on his game if he wants to make it back to the us finals. If he can put in some real effort, he should be able to squeeze in.

Just outside:
John “Kif1re” Vahary – Kif1re has come up against a couple good opponents, and has been able to hold his own, just needs a breakthrough game.
Ryan “satori” Tuosto – Upsetting Light in 3 ball was a step in the right direction, however he needs to work on consistency to be successful in 8 ball.
Brent “CaromReaver” Schultz – FFL in the first match of qualifier 2 is holding him back.

That’ll take care of the power rankings for this week. Qualifier 3 is just around the corner, check here for full coverage next week.
